Moving to Inman, SC: What to Know About Small-Town Living Near the Foothills

If you're drawn to smaller Upstate towns but still want access to Spartanburg, I-26, lakes and the foothills, Inman, SC is an area worth exploring.

Located in northern Spartanburg County, Inman sits between Spartanburg and the North Carolina foothills along the Highway 176 corridor.

The town itself is compact, but an Inman mailing address covers a much broader area that can include suburban neighborhoods, country settings and properties near Lake Bowen.

Downtown Inman Is Growing Around Its Railroad Roots

Inman began developing in the late nineteenth century when the railroad passed through what was then a rural area known as Goen's Depot.

The town officially incorporated in 1882, and the railroad helped establish Inman as a commercial center for northern Spartanburg County. 

Today, downtown development remains centered around Main Street and Mill Street.

The Downtown Inman Pavilion hosts activities such as Music on Mill, while community calendars include markets, concerts, Harvest Day and seasonal events. 

Peaches Are Part of Inman's History

Long before today's residential growth, agriculture was a major part of the surrounding area.

Inman's downtown planning documents note that the town was once known for fresh peach production and that in the 1930s as many as 100 boxcars of peaches could be loaded in a 24-hour period. 

That agricultural history is one reason peach orchards and blossom imagery make sense when representing this portion of northern Spartanburg County.

Lake Bowen Adds a Different Side to Inman

One of the biggest recreational assets associated with the Inman area is Lake Bowen.

The 1,534-acre lake is owned and managed by Spartanburg Water. Lake Bowen Park on Highway 9 in Inman includes boat ramps, a playground, picnic facilities and public access. 

Properties around this part of the Inman area can feel very different from homes closer to downtown.

What Kind of Homes Can You Find in Inman?

Near downtown, buyers may encounter older homes, mill-era properties, traditional neighborhoods and newer infill.

Farther out, you'll find established subdivisions, newer development, lake-area properties, larger lots and rural acreage.

When comparing Inman homes, consider:

• Spartanburg School District One versus District Two
• I-26 access
• Well and septic systems
• Lake restrictions where applicable
• Lot maintenance
• HOA restrictions
• Distance to Spartanburg or Greenville

Schools in the Inman Area

School district boundaries are particularly important here.

Spartanburg County lists Inman within both District One and District Two, depending on location. 

District One includes Inman Elementary, Inman Intermediate and Chapman High School. Chapman High received a Good overall rating on the 2024–25 South Carolina School Report Card. 

Buyers should confirm the assigned schools for every property rather than assuming all Inman addresses feed into the same district.

The Foothills Aren't Far Away

Head north from Inman and the landscape begins to transition toward Campobello, Landrum, Tryon and the Blue Ridge foothills.

Hogback Mountain is visible from portions of the area, and Inman's official downtown history describes the community as being surrounded by rolling hills with views toward the mountain. 

Plans for the future Saluda Grade Trail also follow the historic railroad corridor through this part of the Upstate.

Then take a drive north toward Campobello and Landrum and south toward Boiling Springs and Spartanburg.
